Supporting the Elderly in the Community

Elderly lady holding baby in Autumn

As the sun appears lower in the sky and after a pretty good summer all over the island, the autumn days are fast approaching. Families may have been staying with their relatives bringing happy days to their loved ones and then everything starts to return to normal.

You may be feeling rather lonely now or struggling to manage on your own. How nice would it be to have a friendly face to come to help you out? Whilst you must not give up your independence, risking your health and safety is not a good thing. Apart from health issues, I think that the biggest worry for elderly people is having a fall. You may be able to manage things very well indeed, but a slight stumble can have serious consequences. There is nothing wrong in an extra pair of hands to enable you to remain living as independently as possible in your own home.

For nearly 2 years now we have been making a difference to other peoples’ lives in Anglesey and we look forward to doing our utmost to helping as many people as we can.

The Alzheimer’s Society’s ‘Fix Dementia Care’ campaign

For people with dementia, getting access to good quality care is often difficult if not impossible. People with dementia can spend at least £100,000 on their care which is 15% more expensive than standard social care, just because they were unlucky enough to get dementia and not some other disease. The NHS is haemorrhaging an avoidable £570 million each year due to inadequate care in the community leaving people with dementia vulnerable, ending up in hospital with avoidable infections, or stuck on wards unable to return home due to the lack of support at home.

Please tell your friends and family about this important campaign and ask them to sign up. More information here or visit our Facebook page.

‘Charity of the Month’ – Alzheimer’s Society

As part of the parent company, Bunbury Care Agency’s 50thAnniversary, we launched a ‘Charity of the Month’ campaign last year, which has been very successful.  I would now like to extend this to similar charities and organisations, who are involved in supporting the elderly in their own homes on Anglesey.

This is a Facebook scheme, which means for every ‘Like, Share or Comment’ on Facebook, we will donate £1 up to a maximum of £100. We hope Age Cymru will benefit in February, the North Wales branch of the Anglesey Rotary Club in March and the North Wales Alzheimer’s Society in April.

Autumn Recruitment Days

Recent reports in the press have highlighted, yet again, that the number of over 85-year-olds needing round the clock care is set to treble by 2035. Even worse, the number of people over 65 needing 24-hour care is set to rise by a third. This report warns the care system is now definitely at breaking point.

This rapidly expanding group will have more complex care needs that are unlikely to be met adequately by the social care system. For example, long term conditions such as arthritis and the rise in obesity, let alone the many other diseases like cancer and Parkinson’s.

All this is very worrying information, so it is essential to recruit more experienced and caring people to look after our elderly generation. We cannot help everybody, but we can make a difference to some people.

Campaigning to help people remain living in their own homes

We are a home care agency based in Llanfaelog, Anglesey helping families predominantly on the island of Anglesey and North Wales, although we are nationwide.

Anglesey Home Care is part of the Bunbury Care Agency who is a member of the UKHCA (United Kingdom Home Care Association) and an associate member of SOLLA (Society of Later Life Advisers). SOLLA is the only association in the UK that can provide accredited financial consultants who can advise and assist people with the funding of elderly care.
